Waste to Energy

Today we had TWO technical visits. At 9:00 am, we boarded the bus and headed to the Waste to Energy plant. We suited up in orange vests, yellow hats, blue hard hats, white masks and red ear buds and then went on our way. Wearing my new shoes here was a mistake, they were covered in ash by the end. Regardless, it was interesting to see the combustion chamber and all of the claws. It was a bit hard to hear, but I enjoyed the visit nonetheless. Our class notes helped me understand the process.

After the WtE, we visited the E-Waste plants. Here, we saw all different electronics, from catalytic converters, taken apart and separated by parts, wires and control boards. Then, we saw the graveyard of refrigerators and how the metal was pulverized for reuse. It was so interesting to see the process in action, as I have never understood how it happened before.

After the technical visits, we went to Nora Beach. It was beautiful, with crystal blue waters, just like any of the beaches in Sardinia. We all brought Ichnusa (lemon beers), sat in the sun, and reflected on our experiences at the treatment plants. It was a busy day, but worth it.
