Another day, another trip to a waste management facility! I could get used to this. Today, we visited the facility in Villaservice, which has a landfill, anaerobic digester, wind farm and waste to energy. 4 in 1, that’s crazy! Our guide gave us a detailed presentation in near perfect English, and it turns out he taught himself the language. We were all baffled. Then, we got to suit up. I’m talking white suit, yellow hard hat, white face mask, blue gloves: the whole nine yards. We walked around, saw the birds trying to pick out the organic matter in the waste piles, and we saw the claw. The claw is exactly what you’re thinking: the large spider-like contraption that almost killed our beloved Woody in Toy Story 3. It’s actually purpose is to drop waste into the incinerator, as TS3 taught us, but it’s fun to know all of the detail now. Next, we visited the bubble in which they store the methane produced by the anaerobic digester. It was full, and they tried to explain how the machines and electricity work, but Annalisa and I agreed it was more for mech-es and electricals. On our way back to the bus, our guide was telling me about how everyone at the plant is funny, and how great it is to work there. Little did he know that I already consider it my home.
After the facility, we went to an agriturismo for lunch. We had so many vegetables, it was amazing! We’re talking Italian Beets ladies, game changer. The risotto was really good, but of course it had nothing on Kestral’s. They also gave us some chocolate-orange pound cake which we all ate as we discussed our horoscopes. All in all, great meal.
This agriturismo was extra special because it had its very own anaerobic disgestor. As we walked around the private facility, I could not get over how incredible it is that this farm is completely self-sustained, including their own waste. It’s actually a full cycle system, which should be more prevalent across the globe. We have a lot to learn from this place.
Finally, we ended our visit by spending time with more friends. We hung out with some horses, donkeys, chickens, geese, goats, and a lovely emu. Truly the perfect way to end the perfect day.
